Key Characters

Safiyya

Safiyya is intelligent, emotionally complex, stubborn, affectionate, and deeply protective of the people she loves. Her playful personality is most visible in her interactions with Muhammad, where she constantly teases him and enjoys making him uncomfortable with affectionate questions.

Yet the confident woman readers see in those memories is very different from the broken woman struggling in the present.

Safiyya is carrying an enormous burden. She is pregnant, emotionally devastated, and terrified of what revealing the truth could do to Muhammad and both families. She deliberately allows people to misunderstand her because she believes that is the safest path available.

Her greatest weakness may also be her greatest strength: she is willing to sacrifice herself for the people she loves, even when that sacrifice destroys her own happiness.

Muhammad Gidado

Muhammad is the man whose entire understanding of his future collapses within a few moments. He loves Safiyya deeply and has spent years believing their relationship is heading toward marriage.

He is playful and confident around her, but Safiyya exposes a much softer side of him. The man who appears emotionally strong discovers that he becomes vulnerable whenever she is involved.

His heartbreak is particularly devastating because he did not merely lose a girlfriend. He lost the future he had already imagined.

Daddy

Safiyya's father is a powerful presence in the story. He is hurt, angry, protective, and determined to preserve his family's dignity. His relationship with Safiyya has become strained, but beneath his anger there is clearly a deep love for his daughter.

His reaction to what he believes Safiyya has done creates another major conflict. He wants answers, but Safiyya refuses to give them.

Mommy

Mommy represents one of the strongest sources of emotional support within Safiyya's family. She is concerned about both Safiyya's physical and emotional state and repeatedly tries to keep the situation from becoming even more dangerous.

She also understands that Safiyya's silence is not necessarily an indication that she does not care. Beneath the arguments and frustration, there is a mother trying to protect a daughter who refuses to explain what is really happening.

Yaya Mustapha

Mustapha is one of the more complicated figures in the story. He is Safiyya's brother, yet he is also connected to the marriage decision being made for her. He claims to care deeply about her and says he has repeatedly lied to their parents to protect her.

His discovery of Muhammad's photograph adds another layer of tension. He now knows that there is a man connected to Safiyya, even though he does not yet know the full truth.

Mukhtar

Mukhtar's proposal introduces another disturbing dimension to Safiyya's situation. He offers to marry her after she gives birth and keep the truth hidden.

Rather than providing Safiyya with genuine relief, his proposal creates another question about his intentions and the power dynamics surrounding her.

Hassan and Hussain

The twins provide some of the few moments where Safiyya feels genuinely loved without judgment. Their concern for their sister reminds readers that, despite the family's conflicts, she still has people who want her happiness.

Their relationship with Safiyya also reveals her nurturing side and demonstrates how deeply she cares about her younger brothers.

Analytics and Insight

The strongest feature of Safiyyah is its use of dramatic irony. The reader is allowed to understand that Safiyya is hiding something enormous, while Muhammad remains almost completely unaware of the real circumstances behind her decision.

This creates emotional tension because readers are not simply asking, "Will they end up together?" They are asking, "What truth could possibly justify what Safiyya has done?"

The novel also uses dual perspectives effectively.
